A great trainer must have in-depth knowledge of the industry that they will be training in. They should understand every detail of what goes on in the marketplace, industry concepts, and best practices. Without understanding the content, trainers are unable to simplify the content into teachable and relatable chunks of information. The delivery of training is one of the most integral pieces of a training program, and the trainer is responsible for making sure learners understand the training material. A trainer is a strategic thinker. A strategic thinker possesses strong business acumen and has a good grasp of how the training process directly affects the business. Strategic thinking is not only restricted to being a part of training manager skills but is also one of the attributes of a good trainer as well. There is a strong need for a trainer to develop networking skills. Do take note that a trainer doesn’t only work with learners. A trainer also has to “cross borders” by strategically partnering with counterparts from Operations, HR, and Marketing — just to name a few departments a trainer has to work with. Looking at how the training process fits in the bigger picture and how to strategically partner with the rest of the business are great attributes of a trainer. On the contrary, taking on a silo mentality is, and will always be, the cause of a trainer’s undoing. This end SkillPal makes its way to a new destination. Training is only as effective as the trainer providing it. Organizations who decide to invite a trainer or multiple trainers in to help deliver a training solution for their employees are placing a lot of trust in the abilities of these trainers. The quality of a trainer can either make or break the effectiveness of a training program. In a recent study, it was discovered that the total cost to an organization incurred by ineffective training is a staggering $13.5 million per year per 1,000 employees. The trainer you select to instruct your learners has a direct impact on the effectiveness of training. While it is always a given that classroom facilitation is, in itself, part of the qualities of a good trainer, what’s more, important though is that a trainer is expected to be a facilitator of change — or even better, an advocate of change. With today’s adaptive global workforce and a dynamic business environment, changes are constant. Processes and knowledge that were the standards a few days ago can become obsolete and defunct in the blink of an eye. What is considered as the guiding principles and industry standards today, might be different tomorrow. A trainer is always expected to be at the forefront of change. New processes and recent knowledge would always demand some type of learning intervention. Moreover, with constant changes, competency and performance gaps are always bound to ensue; and the trainer, in turn, can evaluate and recommend viable and sustainable solutions.

A mentor of SkillPal can help you advance within your field and connect you with opportunities that you might not have otherwise had access to. They do this by sharing their knowledge, helping you identify opportunities in your path, and potentially opening doors for you when the time comes. Almost every great achiever in history has claimed that they had a great mentor at some point during their rise to excellence. A mentorship is a valuable tool for turning one’s vision into reality. SkillPal Mentors are expected to guide and advise their mentees, helping them build a successful career or gain a solid footing within a certain organization. Typically, a mentor has one mentee at a time and can focus on shaping their trajectory. Skilled immigrants and international students who want to quickly advance in their career in a new country should take advantage of mentorships. Gaining knowledge from someone who has successfully navigated a similar experience can help you accelerate your growth. Someone who will help you make the right decisions at the right time could influence the rest of your life.

Arguably, one of the most important and most obvious characteristics of a good trainer is the ability to effectively communicate. Often, an organization decides to offer training on a very challenging topic or sensitive material. For this reason, a trainer must be able to clearly and concisely teach the content. In any classroom, you can expect to be teaching to individuals with varying learning styles. Some learners may prefer to learn through listening and others may prefer to learn through images or graphs. It is important for a trainer to be able to communicate effectively with all different types of learners. What do training and development managers do to become exemplary managers? Actually, it’s also very self-explanatory: exemplifying all five traits, with the addition of skills in managing people and business. Like what we mentioned above, all trainer competencies apply to any industry; the same thing goes to anyone within the training department. Training managers though are expected to be more adept at the five skills listed above, as they are not just tasked with running the department, but they are also in charge of training and mentoring more junior trainers.

An effective trainer must have the ability to be flexible and think creatively. Lesson plans for training may work perfectly for one set of learners, but they may be ineffective or disengaging for another set of learners. A great trainer must be able to read the room and adjust their training delivery to meet the needs of the learners. Let’s say you have planned a training session that includes a lot of collaboration and group work. You arrive to deliver the training, and the learners would prefer a more standard approach to the lesson. You, as a trainer, must be flexible in your approach and you must think creatively to adjust your method of delivery on the spot. Additionally, your learners may have less or more background than you originally were told. It makes no sense to teach material that is already known or skip over material that learners may not know. A trainer may need to adjust their content as they deem necessary. Each training solution is going to have its obstacles, and a trainer must be open to change. A mentoring relationship can have huge benefits for both parties. For the learner, there is obviously the opportunity to explore their learning and benefit from someone else’s focus and expertise, either in a particular subject or in supporting the learning process. Learning and development can often get pushed to the bottom of the ‘to do’ list when we’re busy, and the SkillPal mentoring relationship brings it forward again, not least because of the need to prepare for and then attend a mentoring session. For the mentor, the benefits may be more subtle. It is always nice to feel that we are doing something valuable and supporting someone else. A mentoring relationship may also be a useful opportunity to work on a leadership style, particularly coaching, or other communication skills without comments from co-workers about the change.
